Rockland County police warn of ATM machine scams.

Beware when using an ATM. Some crooks could be secretly recording your PIN and siphoning information from your bank card swipe.

Police are urging people who use ATMs to conceal their personal identification numbers when accessing their account.

Without the PIN, the account information skimmed from the bank card is useless, police said.

“Look around for any pinhole cameras” when using a card, said Lt. Charles Delo of the Clarkstown police. “It’s hard to catch, and that’s why they’ve been successful. People also should monitor their accounts for missing money they didn’t take out. “

Clarkstown police became aware of the criminal enterprise on March 31 when a bank customer reported a piece of molding falling down at an ATM on Route 59 in Nanuet as he withdrew money, Sgt. Harry Baumann said.

On Monday, a customer of a New City bank reported that $600 had been withdrawn from his account through an ATM transaction, Baumann said.

The bank learned that someone used the customer’s PIN, he said.

Delo said the customer’s PIN was not accessed through a camera.

“There are different ways people can access someone’s account,” Delo said.

The use of skimmer cards and cameras has been reported in the region, and across the nation. Several police departments such as Ramapo have been notified.
