Orange County, NY - State auditors are accusing officials from the Monroe-Woodbury School District of stashing millions of dollars illegally.

According to the State Comptroller’s Office, officials from the school amassed $13.6 million in surplus funds over three years. They then moved that money into reserve accounts instead of using it to reduce taxes.

Auditors said the district overestimated expenses while increasing their tax levy by $9.3 million over that period. The school district said the audit is inaccurate.

The Comptroller’s Office is recommending the school district create a plan to use the surplus balance to benefit district taxpayers.
