Lauren Spierer, an Edgemont High School graduate, has been missing since last June.
The results from the Illinois State Crime Lab are expected later this month, though Bloomington, Ind., police give no indication that this body is any different from many others that they’ve inquired about since Spierer vanished in June while attending Indiana University.
“We, like many other agencies with an active missing-persons case, are waiting for the results from their investigation to see if it has any relevance to our case,” said Capt. Joe Qualters of the Bloomington police.
“That being said, why this particular body has gained more attention from the media is surprising to me since we had made no mention of it to any media outlets prior to the inquiries that began coming in,” he said.
“We are interested in all unidentified bodies as part of our investigation, but the body in Illinois holds no more or less promise for now than any of the several others that have come to our attention over the last 10 months.”
A resident of Newton, Ill., about 100 miles west of Bloomington, discovered the remains March 10.
Newton is in Jasper County, where Sheriff Ed Francis told a local newspaper in mid-March that this was not yet a criminal case.
He said that Jasper does not have any missing persons and that agencies from other areas have submitted missing-persons information to his department.
