Jewish group wants Peoria bishop's apology for comparing Obama policies with Hitler's

Group criticizes the mention of Hitler, Stalin in remarks against Obama health care policies

PEORIA, Ill.  — The Anti-Defamation League wants Peoria Roman Catholic Bishop Daniel Jenky to apologize for a Sunday homily that compared President Barack Obama's heath care policies to actions by Hitler.

Speaking in St. Mary's Cathedral, Jenky contended Obama has a "radical, pro-abortion and extreme secularist agenda." He added Obama is following governments in previous centuries that "tried to force Christians to huddle and hide only within the confines of their churches." He pointed to Bismarck and Hitler in Germany and Stalin in the Soviet Union.

Anti-Defamation League regional director Lonnie Nasatir on Wednesday called Jenky's remarks "completely over the top." He tells the Chicago Tribune that Jenky needs a history lesson on the "religious intolerance and anti-Semitism fostered in society" by Stalin, and Hitler."

A diocese spokeswoman couldn't be reached for comment.
